Why Do People Blog?

There can be no doubt about it. Blogging is big. Everyone, it seems, has a blog now. I just had a look on the Home Page at Wordpress (where I have a couple of blogs) and on that Home Page they have some stats and you know what? The number of blogs currently at Wordpress is over 4 million! Can you believe that?

And that is just at Wordpress. Blogger don't seem to publish stats like that. Or if they do, they don't make it obvious, as I haven't been able to find them. But I bet it's a similar figure.

Some of the blogs I've looked at though, and I really do wonder why the people bothered to even start them at all. I looked at a blog last week and it was all in English words but they were just strung together, it looked like at random to me. I don't know, maybe there are some people in some clique or other that can understand it, but I certainly couldn't!

Then there are the cat-picture blogs - oh, no, don't get me started on that. Sorry to those people that enjoy seeing other people's silly cat pictures, but - excuse me?

So, why do people blog? Is it a) to connect with family or friends? b) to make money? c) to get it off their chest - that is, to voice their opinion about something they feel strongly about? d) or some other reason?
